About this Tut

This Tutorial will show you how to take a colored picture and change it to black and white with only a certain part colored. This is a very popular thing to do with photos and once you have learned the basics on how to do this you can play around to make your own images unique.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial and if you have any problems please let me know!

Note: All images can be clicked on to view FULL...this may be helpful if you are trying to read something!

Step 1

-Open the picture you would like to edit by going File > Open and browse your pictures.

- Next you will need to change your layer from a "background layer" to a "raster layer" Layers > Promote background layer (see image below)

Step 2

- Next you will need to duplicate your picture Layers > Duplicate (see Image below)

Step 3

-Make sure on the right side "Copy of Raster 1" is selected

-Next you will need to change the Duplicate (Copy of Raster Layer) to Black and White Effects > Photo Effects > Black and White Film (see image below)

Step 4

-Change the picture to black and white by using the options in the window

- I recommend hitting the "suggest color" button, I marked it with an arrow

-Notice the slide bars for the "brightness" and "clarify" you will need to slide those back and forth until you get the Black and White image you like. (every picture is different)

Step 5

-Get out the selection tool from the left hand menu. For this we will use the lasso

-Notice on the top I have changed the settings, this will allow for a smoother look Feather is at 2 and Smoothing is at 3

Step 6

-Click and drag your mouse around the image that you want to be in color.

Note: Make a connecting line, otherwise PSP will connect it and it might not look right

-Once you have the image selected hit the delete key on your keyboard

- Right click your mouse to deselect

Note: Zooming way in and making smaller selections at a time can make it easier

Step 7

*****This is another option to step 6 you do not have to do both*****

-Sometimes the selection tool doesnt have as much control or some people just dont like it, you can use the eraser instead

-Click on the eraser in the left tool bar (note the arrow)

-Adjust your settings up top you want your hardness to be at most 50. The size will of course depend on the image you are working with. (notice the arrows point to these adjustments)

-Once your settings are set you can just erase the parts you want in color

Step 8

- Lastly merge the two layers together Layers > Merge > Merge Visable

- Save your image File > Save As > "Title"

Finished Product

Congrats! You have made a wonderful Black and White Selective Coloring image!

I am relatively computer illiterate, and wanted a push-button way to do this. When I got my new software and found out that it didn't have an easy way to do it I was sort of dissapointed. I looked on the Internet, and when I found this I was elated! Thanks so much! You made it easy... :)

QUITE DISSAPOINTED I HAVE ANOTHER PROGRAM THAT YOU PUSH ONE BUTTON AND ITS DONE, THIS WAY MAKES IT A LOT OF WORK AND THE FINISHED PRODUCT IS NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD.

Thanks. Very clearly explained. And as some others said, wanted to do that for ages.
